This latest publication in Kelsey’s ‘Military Vehicles Archive’ series tells the 85-year story of Alvis.
The company was formed in 1919, and was originally best-known for luxury motorcars. A handful of still-born armoured vehicles were produced in the ‘thirties, but it wasn’t until the post-war years that Alvis began to produce military vehicles in quantity; the six-wheeled Saladin, Saracen, Salamander and Stalwart need little introduction. The text also covers the tracked CVR(T), and those vehicles that became part of the Alvis portfolio as a result of acquisition, including the Warrior and the Hägglunds Bv206 family.
Multiple changes of ownership are also described, together with the twists and turns of the last decades of the 20th Century. The name Alvis, and the distinctive red triangle logo, were finally superseded in 2004.
