INTRODUCTION TO THE LATEST IN THE WORLD OF SHIPS SERIES
Covid-19 hit the international cruise industry extremely hard in 2020, a situation that resulted in a number of ships being removed from service much earlier than expected. Among these have been the last vessels originally built for liner service but later modified for cruising. In a salute to these latter ships, this publication looks back at the development of modern-day cruising and some of the ships and companies that evolved as the industry took shape in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. In 1974 the amended Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations were enacted, which steadily decreased the number of old liners until only a handful remained in service after 2010.
