Magazine Extras:
During the weeks leading up to publication of his magazine, editor Dan was fortunate enough to fly to the USA and spend a few days in the company of Vivian Campbell, guitarist with rock juggernaut, Def Leppard. Following the purchase of a 964 Carrera 2 in the early 1990s, Viv became a die-hard Porschephile and has the collection of Stuttgart-crested cars to prove it.
As launch of the band’s new album, Drastic Symphonies, fast approaches, we discussed his long and fruitful relationship with Porsches. Having been bowled over by the road-handling abilities of the aforementioned 964, he hasn’t looked back and counts two outstanding 356s among his current fast fleet, which also includes a stunning Aga Blue 1967 911 S. All three cars have been wonderfully restored.
This edition of Classic Porsche showcases Viv’s dynamic duo of 356s. On the face of it, these are two very different cars — one being a Type 1 coupe, the other a Type 2 Speedster - cut from the same cloth, but as you’ll discover, both air-cooled classics satisfy their master’s desire for punchy Porsche performance. And that’s saying something, considering he owns a quintet of amazing RS-badged water-cooled 911s.
Power and style is a theme running throughout this issue. Extraordinary transformations abound, as demonstrated by our cover star, which started life as a 964 Carrera 4 Cabriolet before being treated to RSR styling and a tin top. Speaking of RSR looks, we were delighted to be reunited with the 911 Turbo restomod assembled by Carrera Classics and further enhanced by current owner, Steve Miller. We also thoroughly enjoyed our time in the company of Ryan Polson’s colourful (in every sense) 912, but it isn’t only wild rides which get us excited. Proving the point, we were gagging to lay eyes on the totally unrestored Guards Red Carrera 3.2 you’ll read about across the following pages. The classic Porsche scene is nothing if not varied.
Issue Summary:
We showcase the extraordinary transformation of a 964 Carrera 4 Cabriolet into a wide-body coupe, plus Viv Campbell's 356 Speedster and modified 356 coupe.
Top 3 Issue Features:
PUT A LID ON IT - Just another 911 restomod? Not a bit of it. The team at Rindt Vehicle Design has really pushed the envelope with this 300bhp wide-body backdate based on a 1990 964 Carrera 4 Cabriolet.
STAR POWER - Soon after its introduction in late 1954, the 356 Speedster attracted many admirers from the world of entertainment. Fast-forward to the present day, and this open-top Porsche continues to captivate stars of the stage, as we discovered when visiting Def Leppard guitarist, Vivian Campbell, at his home in a snow-covered New England.
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST - The sweet spot of the classic, air-cooled 911 generation? The ultimate G-series 911? There is a strong argument for the Carrera 3.2 being both.
