Due to popular demand this 100 page publication has been reprinted in perfect bound format. A high quality finish, measuring 274mm by 218mm.
The publication is a unique record of 170 rare colour pictures of passenger ships that have called at Cape Town from the mid-1950s to 2017.
The photographer, Ian Shiffman, took his first colour slide at the age of 11. His photographic work in this publication features many previously unpublished colour pictures of ships that called at Cape Town. The book is divided into three sections organised chronologically.
Sections 1 covers the period from the mid 1950s to 1966. This section covers some of the ships ‘diverted’ when the Suez Canal was closed between June 1956 and March 1967. Besides passenger ships, several troop ships carrying soldiers from the Middle East to the UK also called. There are photographs of a number of famous Union-Castle liners prior to them being withdrawn from service, with most being sold for scrap and others converted into cruise ships for further service.
Section two covers 1967 to 1980 featuring the end of liner services and diverts’ due to the eight-year closure of the Suez Canal. Unique pictures feature ships heading for the breakers yards, while others on delivery voyages to new owners for further trading.
Section three features cruise ships that called between 1981 and 2017, and covers a few former passenger ships under special voyages. The captions have been provided by ship historian Malcolm Cranfield and provide extra details that enhances the outstanding photos.
