Fifteen years of 991? It seems scarcely believable, but according to how our favourite manufacturer classifies its legacy models, this massive-selling 911 will soon officially be a classic Porsche. Kinda odd, considering most of us consider the 991 to be a relatively new car.
As far as the 911 timeline is concerned, the 991 was a radical redevelopment of its maker’s flagship product line. In fact, this was only the third new 911 platform since work began on the Type 901. The previous major evolution of the 911 arrived in the form of water cooling and ‘fried egg’ headlights, and though there’s no point trying to pretend the 991 ruffled feathers anywhere near as much as the 996, the later Neunelfer’s size, electrically assisted steering and, as enthusiasts would go on to discover, elimination of normally aspirated engines for Carreras certainly put a few noses out of joint.
Compared to production volume for each of the previous six generations of 911, however, the 991 was a runaway success, with almost quarter of a million cars assembled until model discontinuation at the close of 2019. Throughout 2026 we’ll be celebrating the 991 product line, kicking off with a showcase of standout examples of the breed in this issue of 911 & Porsche World. Kick back and enjoy.
