Welcome to the July 2023 issue of Old Glory where the weather is hot and sunny and the rally season has seen record crowds attend events all across the UK and Ireland particularly at the Strumpshaw and Carrington rallies which are featured inside these pages.
Old Timer Looks Back
This month David Reed talks to old timer Robert Bate about the engines he has owned including his beloved Aveling & Porter roller called Crusader which has now been immortalised as a model by Oxford Diecast Ltd in 1:76 scale (11520). We look at a very rare Davey Paxman 3hp portable the youngest known survivor made at the Colchester factory in 1925. It made its debut at Will Woodward’s steam event at Buglawton, Cheshire on 13 May where members of the Road Locomotive Society was his special guests. Bob Moorman visits his local Weald of Kent Traction Engine Society late April event at West Peckham which was back to pre covid levels.
Steam at Llandudno
David Reed visited this famous event which might be its last in its present format and enjoyed his day in Wales. Jo Lewis travelled to Abbey Hill in Somerset for their annual rally which brought up some new items on the scene from the West Country. We also travel to Stradsett Hall, Downham Market, Norfolk for their big event of the season which was cancelled on the Monday over rain.
