About the author

A retired mechanical engineer, Jim Shaw has written for most of the world’s major transportation and marine publications over four decades. He holds a US Merchant Mariner’s Document and has been a regular contributor to Ships Monthly since 1976. His interest in ships can be traced back to a 1964 voyage on P&O’s Oronsay to work on the Snowy Mountains hydroelectric scheme in south-east Australia.
