Old Glory Magazine  |  February 2017

Old Glory is Britain’s best-selling magazine for steam and vintage machinery enthusiasts. Its blend of news, rally reports, exclusive features and archive material has provided inspiration for new restoration projects as well as giving readers a rare look at some old favourites.

Inside this issue..

It may be wintry and gloomy outside but in the pages of Old Glory there are stories to warm your heart and gladden your soul.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has given the Skylark IX Recovery Trust initial approval for a £423,300 grant for its project to transform the vessel into a floating museum. Skylark IX, built as a passenger cruiser for 75 people in 1927, was called to the aid of stranded Allied troops in Dunkirk in 1940 and helped to save more than 600 lives.

The little ship’s restoration will be used as a training programme for recovering drug addicts in Dumbarton.

Back on dry land (well, as dry as it can be during this soggy weather!) we’ve got stories to cheer the dull days of January and February that spread as far as sunny Western Australia, as Derek Rayner regales us with his Antipodean adventure to Whiteman Park and its host of museums for the transport enthusiast.

There’s a special feature on the Museum of English Rural Life in Reading and a fabulous double-page photograph taken in 1961 when Pickfords moved GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 locomotive No 4073 Caerphilly Castle to the now-closed Clapham Transport Museum. Check out the clothes, the shop fronts and the other vehicles on the roads in the days before the mobile phone, the congestion charge and the sat nav!

But maybe the most evocative image in this issue is a photograph taken 110 years ago of a Leyland Class H steam wagon on a brewery delivery. Oh, how times and fashions have changed!
